Types of Rope
Diameter
Generally, the thicker the rope, the heavier and stiffer it is. If you’re just starting out, it’s recommended to go with a 12mm-16mm rope that isn’t too heavy. This ensures you don’t overstrain yourself and develop bad habits through overcompensating with incorrect movements. A lighter rope also ensures that you won’t tire out as quickly and can get more swings in, this is important as you experiment and practice new moves.
Upgrade to a heavier rope when you’re ready to build more strength.
Stiffness
A soft and flexible rope is ideal for most moves. Stiffer ropes are similar to beaded jump ropes and are generally heavier and slower, this may be preferred if you’re looking to get more technical and focus more on learning tricks.
How to Size a rope
A flow rope should be shorter than a skipping rope (though it can also be the same length). Why?
With a skipping rope, a longer rope is more forgiving if your form isn’t as good; however, if it’s too long, the rope will also bounce off the floor and interfere with your rhythm and trip you up. Shorter ropes are typically preferred by advanced skippers as it gives more control and speed.
For Flow Ropes, an ideal length is from roughly your belly button to the ground. This differs by individuals as everyone has different length torsos and limbs. I find it’s ideal if the rope barely hits the ground when you’re swinging it, this minimizes wear and tear on the rope, reduces coiling, and gives you a little more control.
